NEUADD NEWS 2006
We were featured in the Sunday Times 'the top ten holiday cottage complexes, AND we won Wales in Bloom again - seven years in a row! The gardens have always been a special part of a holiday at Neuadd. Wild flowers too were fantastic as ever in 2005, starting with snowdrops and little Welsh daffodils (both of which are already in bloom), then violets, primroses, bluebells, spotted orchids, foxgloves, big white daisies, sorrel, pink campion, ragged robin, dog roses, toadflax, tiny blue scabious, honeysuckle, and the delicate harebell. This lovely, continuous cavalcade of nature struck us forcefully nearly thirty years ago when we came to Wales, and it's still wonderful. Birdlife is prolific and as well as an amazing array of garden song birds, we are delighted to have red kites regularly circling over Neuadd, as well as the sparrow hawk with its killer instinct to 'thin out' our white doves!` Our barn owls are still in residence in their purpose built apartment high up in the stable building. In the spring you can watch mum or dad poised in the arched entrance at about 8.00 pm ready to take off and hunt for their young, who make a vigorous screeching noise, so are not easily forgotten! The bottle nose dolphins on this part of the coast are famous and seem more numerous than before. Of course everyone wants to see them and it's very exciting when you spot that joyous leaping through the waves. Grey seals are very common, and Cwm Tydu is their favourite birthing spot in September and October. The mothers leave their fluffy white pups tucked into a corner of the cove and come ashore to feed them until they are ready to take to the sea. It is a magical sight. Jaffa, our much loved cocker spaniel, is coping well with being blind and deaf. She was born here so gets about amazingly well and still knocks at cottage doors. She is totally bomb proof and has a large fan club all over the world. We lost dear Hattie, Jaffa's mother, last year at the good age of fourteen years. She is buried alongside earlier cocker spaniel pets in the dog cemetery on the way to the swimming pool. Our duck families are great fun. The little call ducks are real characters, with the females in particular 'talking' all the time.. They all enjoy the freedom of flying between the duck pond here and our lake in the valley. Very sadly we have lost both our donkeys, Esme of old age and we think Lily pined away. We are looking around for replacements but Henry the Shetland pony seems happy with the sheep and lambs for the time being. We are also goatless at the moment as Willian passed away recently. Clarissa, our very dear piggy, is a real softy. She will roll over so that you can tickle her tummy, when she then proceeds into a trance-like state grunting quietly. We would like to find her a friend as she lives alone and does like company. Likewise Emily the rabbit, although she has lived alone for so long she would perhaps not welcome an intruder into her space. She is looking particularly well with a new winter fur coat. West Wales remains a haven of green tranquillity with the National Garden of Wales at Middleton Hall and Aberglasney Gardens very near each other and only a short drive from Neuadd. We love Aberglasney and like to visit at least once a year to follow progress and enjoy excellent, coffee, lunch and cream tea in a lovely setting. The National Trust country house designed by Nash at Llanerchaeron near Aberaeron is now fully open. The estate buildings and gardens have always been interesting but the house and domestic offices are fascinating. We have just heard that the lake and the water wheel is now open and there are also rare breed farm animals in residence again as well as a farm shop - well worth a visit and only a very short drive from Neuadd. Our championship size tennis court is superb and has proved an enormous attraction for young and old. This year one small child became totally hooked and went home to have lessons - he displayed great natural talent. We hope you enjoy our website. Do let us have your comments. Neuadd is special. Of course I am seriously biased but then many of our guests are too. The children of some of our very first visitors are now introducing Neuadd as a magical holiday destination, to their own children. Give us a call on 01545 560324 any time - there's still nothing quite like a one to one real conversation, or if you prefer, email us at enquiries@neuadd-farm-cottages.co.uk Llinos Young March 2006 |
